About three and a half years ago I posted a doo-wop compilation called Doo-Wop Twist Party. For reasons I have never understood it has been one of my most popular posts in recent years. Not that there's anything wrong with it - it's really good. I'm just surprised by its enduring appeal.

This was my main series of highest quality classic doo-wop rarities, between the earlier Five Star Doo-Wop series and the later Classic Doo-wop For Moderns, it represents the cream of the tens of thousands of doo-wop tracks I have auditioned over the last several years.

FIVE STAR DOO-WOP
My mission is to make high quality, entertaining doo-wop CDs/playlists that people will actually want to listen too. This is in response to the vast compilations to be found on the internet (e.g. Rare Black Doo-Wop Sounds, Vocal Group Harmony and A Ton And A Half Of Doo-Wop) which contain a lot of good stuff, along with plenty of lesser tracks, in some cases paying little regard to sound quality, and are pretty indigestible in my opinion.
I audition thousands of tracks, choose the best (the hit rate is about 1 in 60), and then find the best quality version I can of each one. These are then arranged into varied and hopefully entertaining sequences.

In a certain proportion of doo-wop records, the lead vocal is shared equally between two singers. The resulting two-part harmony can have very pleasing results - to my ears anyway. Sometimes it's an actual duo e.g. Marvin & Johnny or sometimes it's two members of a larger group.

THE ARRANGEMENT: HUGE DOO-WOP HARMONIES
This is the kind of doo-wop I love the most - with soaring vocal arrangements which have obviously had a lot of care and thought put into them.
The sound can be so massive that it's sometimes hard to believe that most doo-wop groups had only had 4 or 5 members. And, 60 years ago, multitracking was rarely an option.

The Rate Your Music website recently published a list of the top 100 doo-wop singles, as rated by its users. I have brought together all the tracks, including B-sides, into 10 volumes (see links below). The tracks are in reverse order, 100-1

I came up with the title for the series and thought it was super clever - for about 5 minutes. Then I remembered that the English folk singer Peter Bellamy had an album of the same name in 1979. But heck, it's such a good fit for this series that I'm going to use it anyway. Not much chance of anyone confusing the two projects. And besides, I am reinstating the comma from Joni's "Both Sides, Now" which Peter Bellamy didn't use. In fact I went to considerable trouble and expense to obtain the actual comma used in the original and had it professionally refurbished.
